In 2005, Trapani was also the location for chapters 8 and 9 of the Louis Vuitton Cup, part of the America's Cup. 

Although the outer edges of Trapani are full of concrete edifices, go into the historic heart and the atmosphere changes into something altogether softer. Beautiful Baroque buildings, charming churches and the usual pedestrian fare of shops and restaurants, provide the perfect way to while away a summer's afternoon. The delicious, local ice creams and pastries are enough to tempt even those with the strongest willpower away from dieting and to cool down against the sizzling Trapani weather, a traditional ice-cold slushy called a granita offers the perfect solution. Flavors include almond, coffee and a variety of fruits, although the most popular is generally lemon.    

With amazing vistas over the city and the Gulf of Castellammare, the ancient town of Erice is situated roughly 12 kilometers away and 2500 feet up Monte San Giuliani. A cable car goes direct from Trapani to Erice or for those who have arranged car hire at Trapani Airport; it is reachable via the Vito Carvini. Here there are fusions of historic styles to uncover yet the labyrinth of winding, cobbled streets allows it to retain a predominantly medieval charm. Architecture of particular note is the 14th century cathedral, the Chiesa Matrice, the ruins of the Greek Temple of Aphrodite and the impressive 12th century Castello di Venere (Venus Castle), built by the Normans on the site of another ancient temple dedicated to the goddess of love. Some of the best views out to the Egadi Islands are afforded from the castle and from the surrounding Giardiani del Ballo (public gardens).
